Tissues are those small pieces of soft paper that we all rely on to wipe our nose or clean our glasses. They are so much part of today's world that we usually don't give them a second thought.
Before paper tissues, people used small, square pieces of cloth called handkerchiefs. But people had to wash these handkerchiefs regularly in order to keep them clean. Can you imagine how disgusting it was to wash an already used handkerchief by hand? Yack! Remember, they didn't have washing machines back then! Also the use of old-fashioned handkerchiefs meant that diseases were passed from one person to another.
Then, in 1924, someone had the brilliant idea of making a handkerchief out of paper. The first tissues were actually made for film stars because they were perfect for taking off their make-up. But soon everyone wanted to use them and tissues became available everywhere.
Today, you can find tissues wherever you go. And this small invention has made our lives a lot healthier and cleaner.
