Story: Onstage

CLICK on the picture to listen to the story!!
Michelle finished playing the last few bars of her minuet, then bowed to the stuffed animals on her bed.
“There, three times in a row with no mistakes,” she said. “I just hope I can play it that well at the recital.”

In just an hour she would be playing her first solo, and the thought was giving her butterflies. In fact, her stomach was doing somersaults.
“You’re lucky you don’t have to play by yourself in front of everybody,” she said, smoothing Lea the Leopard’s spotted fur and patting See-more Giraffe on the head. Then, gazing down at the smiling face of Zoey the Zebra, Michelle scolded, “You’re a big help. How can you be so happy at a time like this?”
She looked around the room at the bear, lion, monkey, and other animals that lined her bed and shelves. “I wish you could all come with me,” she sighed. She gave them one last glance and went to join her parents in the car.
“Do I have to play in the recital?” asked Michelle as she climbed into the back seat.
“Is my favorite first-grader getting nervous?” her dad asked, smiling.
Michelle didn’t answer. She was trying to picture what it would be like to play in front of all those people.
“You’ll do fine,” said Mom. “The first time is always the hardest.”
When they arrived at the auditorium, Michelle headed backstage. She handed her violin to her teacher for tuning and tiptoed over to where the curtains parted. Looking out, she could see that all the seats were filled, with many more people standing in back. Now her stomach was really doing flip-flops.
Nervously she took her violin from Mrs. Allen and sat with the other students onstage. She gulped as the curtains started to open and her teacher picked up the microphone to begin the program.
One by one the students played their pieces. Finally Michelle heard Mrs. Allen announce, “Our last student tonight will be Michelle Merrick, who will play Bach’s Minuet in G Major.”
Michelle’s heart pounded as she walked toward the front of the stage. She put her violin under her chin and placed the bow on the strings. But she couldn’t remember even her first note.
Her eyes filled with tears. She shut them, hoping to blink the tears away. When she opened them again, everything seemed blurry. Oddly, it looked as if all the people in the room had changed into animals.
A woman in the front row looked just like Lea the Leopard. A young man behind her might be See-more Giraffe, and she was sure that she saw her smiling Zoey the Zebra standing in back.
She felt like giggling. It was almost like being at home. More relaxed now, she remembered her piece.
As she played, she looked out at her audience. Some of the animals seemed to be changing back into people. But Michelle was no longer nervous. The audience looked friendly now.
Finally she played the last note. She tucked her violin under her arm and took a big bow. She had done it! She had played her first solo!
As Michelle walked offstage, her parents greeted her with hugs. “We’re sure proud of you,” said Dad. “Say, let’s go for an ice-cream cone and get away from this crowd. It’s a real zoo in here.”
Michelle grinned. “You can say that again,” she whispered.

Fly Butterfly - A Butterfly Fairytale

This is the tale I used to narrate my baby nephew to put him to sleep. He used to love it. Then one day his older sister decided to write it down. She hasn't finished it yet...

nce upon a time, back up in the mountains, there was a little butterfly. She was very sad, because the other butterflies didn't want to play with her. The special  thing with her, was that she changed colors lots of times in one day, so we can't tell with detail what color she was! She was very beautiful... But she wasn't able to recognize it, because butterflies don't have any mirrors!

One day, she decided to go away from the mountain where she lived and to move to another place. The last night she slept on her flower, she had a very strange dream. She dreamt that a fairy came to her while she was sleeping and said :
- Hello little butterfly. I know that you want to go away from this mountain, so I came to tell you that if you want to be happy where you go, you must cross the mountain. Then, you'll see a city, named Kalamata, which is near the sea, and near this mountain. Then, you will just have to go to a house which has a big garden  with three palm trees. As many are the palm trees as many are the children.
- So, how many are the children?
- Can't you estimate?
- Errr..... four? No, not four, two, or five?...
- There are three palm trees so there are three children silly butterfly!

- I don't believe that such a wonderful place like that really exists!
said the butterfly.
- Then, go and see by yourself! the fairy answered. After that, she  disappeared...
The butterfly woke up, but she didn't see the fairy! What was that magic thing?! she wandered. Were all the things I dreamt about real?
She drank some flower juice and she begun her trip. After flying for some hours, she arrived at the top of the mountain, and she sat on a flower to rest. Then she saw Kalamata, and what a green city it is. She started flying again, but this time, she was searching for the  house with the garden with the three palm trees. She was searching, and searching, and finally she found it. It was a house with a very big garden and lots of  flowers. She sat on a flower.
- "Now I can take some flower-power and relax," was all she said. After a moment, she had fallen asleep... Suddenly, a gentle breeze started blowing and stroke the butterfly, it was like it was saying "Goodnight, little butterfly."
The next day, she woke up by a childish laugh and she saw three children. The first one was a girl. She was 11 years old, she had green to brown eyes and a kind smile. She also had medium light brown hair she was tall and she was wearing glasses. The second one was a boy. He was 9 years old and he was taller than the girl, although the girl was 14 months older. He had brown eyes and hair and he was good looking. The last one was a boy. He was 5 years old and he had light brown hair, brown eyes and he was jumping happily while he was walking.
"Those must be the children the fairy told me about," thought the butterfly. "Let's go to meet them!" She flew quickly to reach them. The bigger boy started shouting. "Stop, Panos! The butterfly can't hurt you!" said the girl. "A butterfly!" said the little boy. "Leave the butterfly alone Tasos!"

Memories: A Moonless Night

It was a dark summer night quite a few years ago. Ellie was lying under the huge mulberry tree in our garden. As usually, we were all on our veranda discussing lively. Suddenly, we saw Ellie jumping up and running after something we thought that it was a cat.

Ellie ran up and down in front of us several times barking and making a lot of noise. We called out on her,''Ellie, Ellie, stop, come back! Ellie, back!''. She wouldn't listen! And then we realised that what Ellie was running after was a huge rat and not a cat! It goes without saying that then we started loading her, ''Well done Ellie! Get it Ellie!''.

At that point, all the neighbours who had realised what was happening, came out on their balconies with torches and lights trying to help her catch the rat.''Bravo Ellie! Catch it Ellie! Here Ellie! There Ellie!'', everyone was shouting trying to spot the rat with their torches. It was all so funny that so many people proved to be Ellie's fans!  Of course Ellie caught the rat, as anyone would expect. She was fast, strong, very clever and very loyal to all of us. She was the best dog anyone could ever have. That's why we have never forgotten her, neither will we ever forget her. She was part of our lives.

But as nona has always told us, Ellie is in taygetos, on holiday! High up, near the sky, near the stars! Some day she will come back, when she misses us.

I think she has missed us and is back! Only that now she likes being called Liza!
