Did you know?

             by Panos Z. &  Penelope Z.

A. Mosquitoes are one of the world's most dangerous insects - over 700 million people become ill every year because of the diseases mosquitoes carry. One of these diseases, malaria, gets its name from the words mal and aria, which means bad air. In the past, people thought all diseases were caused by dangerous air.

B. People who live in very noisy areas, such as near airports or busy motorways may have higher blood pressure than people who live in quieter areas. Ear plugs are a useful way to solve this problem.

C. Fish is generally considered to be good for your health, but eating one kind - the blowfish - can kill you. Some parts of this fish are so poisonous that if you eat them, you can die immediately. That's why chefs who prepare this dish have to be very, very careful and make sure that they only serve the healthy parts of the fish.

D. In ancient Greece, people whose feet hurt would put them in water containing fish which gave them electric shocks. When the fish stung them, it made their feet less painful!!!!

E. If the amount of water in your body is reduced by just 1%, you feel thirsty. One symptom of drinking too little is tiredness, so the next time you feel sleepy, maybe you should have a glass of water!Thirst is more serious than hunger - you can live for a month without food, but only for a few days without water.

F. Many of us feel nervous before a doctor's appointment. However, people with iatrophobia ( the fear of doctors ) are so scared that they may shake or cry while they are waiting fot their appointment!
