The battle of marathon took place in 450 BC,during the first persian invation of Greece.It was fought between the citizens of Athens ,aided by Platea,and a Persian force commanded by Datis and Artaphermes.It was the culmination of the first attempt of Persia,under king Darious I,to subjugate Greece.
